Question: What is the health-care I need to take while traveling to India?
Answer: Any person (including infants over six months old) arriving India by air or sea from an infected country must obtain a yellow fever certificate (including passengers who have been transit in a country in the endemic zone). Meningococcal vaccine is recommended for all travelers who intend to visit India particularly the states of North East India including Meghalaya, Tripura & Mizoram.

Good healthcare facilities, are available in all major cities in India but healthcare facilities in rural areas are limited. Travelers are strongly advised to take full comprehensive medical insurance before travelling to India. Vaccinations are sometimes advised for hepatitis A and B, Japanese encephalitis, tuberculosis (for infants), polio and typhoid. Dengue and malaria are both caused by mosquito bites and are prevalent in hot and humid conditions. There are occasional, seasonal outbreaks of dengue fever. Travelers should vigilantly protect themselves against mosquito bites. Malaria prevention is strongly recommended, so use mosquito/ insect repellent and anti-malaria pills and wear protective clothing. Obtain anti-malarial medicine from your doctor before travelling.

Tap water is not safe to drink, therefore always go for mineral water, which is widely available. However, do check the seal on bottled water before drinking.

Carry rehydration solution packets, Pepto Bismol or Imodium in case you are afflicted. Before your travel, seek medical advice about what to take for self-treatment.

Also carry the adequate clothing as per the season you are travelling. In most of the hotels from 3star- 5 Star, doctors are available on call 24 hours. Please make sure you have a medical insurance from your country.

Answer: Yes, you need to take some special permits to travel to certain parts of India. These permits can be obtained after your arrival in India. The FRROs (Foreigners' Regional Registration Offices) in New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta and the Chief Immigration Officer in Madras can issue the same as well as group permits. This permit is valid for a maximum period of 15 days. Permits must be applied for at least two weeks in advance for group tourists. The special Permits are Required for: Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Manipur, Parts of Himachal Pradesh, Parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Parts of Rajasthan, Parts of Uttarakhand, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands.

Answer: Tourists are not allowed to bring Indian Rupees (currency) in India or take it out of the country. Unlimited amounts of foreign currency or traveller's cheques are allowed to bring with you but you have to declare the currency on arrival in India if the value of foreign currency exceeds US$ 5,000/- or its equivalent OR foreign currency notes/ travellers cheques exceed US$ 10,000/- or its equivalent, it should be declared to the custom authorities and a certificate to be obtained from them.
